SEVENS ACQUIRE RIGHTS TO BENIMON, THAMES AND DRAFT PICK IN TRADES WITH STARS, BULLS
WILMINGTON, DE – MARCH 2, 2017 – The Delaware 87ers today announced that the team has acquired the Returning Player Rights to forward Jerrelle Benimon from the Salt Lake City Stars in exchange for Brandon Triche. In a separate move, the Sevens also acquired the Returning Player Rights to guard Xavier Thames and a 2017 third-round pick from the Windy City Bulls in exchange for David Laury III and Delaware’s 2017 fourth-round pick. Both trades are pending the completion of physicals.
Benimon (6-8, 245) most recently played for Qingdao of China in the CBA (2016-17), averaging 19 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks per game. The season prior, he played with Guangzhou Long-Lions of China in the CBA (2015-16), averaging 25 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block per game. He has appeared in two NBA games with the Utah Jazz and spent a season with the Idaho Stampede (2014-15). While playing for Idaho, he was an first-team All-Rookie and first-team All D-League selection, in addition to an NBA D-League Showcase Honorable Mention Team honoree. Benimon was a collegiate standout at Towson University (MD), averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds per game his senior season.
Thames (6-3, 187) most recently played for MZT Skopje Aerodrom of the Republic of Macedonia in the Liga ABA (2016-17), averaging 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal per game. He spent the previous two seasons with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (2014-16), averaging eight points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal per game. Thames was a 2014 Second Round Pick of the Toronto Raptors following a collegiate career at San Diego State in which he averaged 18 points per game as a senior.
